THE GEOPOLITICAL CLIMATE

The world in the year 2050

The world is not as it was - since the rise of the United Empire, several alliances have risen out of the conflict perpetuated by its growth. These alliances are defined by their core beliefs, and their response to the Empire's movements.

The United Empire

  • Anti-magic regime.

  • Exclusive worship of the One True God (monotheism).

  • Militaristic control over Empire regions.

  • Expansion into neighboring regions in an effort to eliminate magic use from the world.

You can read more on the Empire, and its beliefs here

The Eastern Alliance

  • Anti-Empire focus - vehemently denounces the Empire's actions and values, prioritizes reducing its spread.

  • Militaristic defense of allied regions - cooperation between allied militaries.

  • Military outposts exist all throughout key points in these regions, shared between allies.

  • Neutral stance on magic.

  • Neutral stance on monotheism - this religion is not dominant in any of the regions.

KEY

The Western Alliance

  • Primarily made up of European countries

  • Initially choosing a peaceful response to the Empire, was forced into military defense and now is more militarized as a result of the Empire's conflict in its regions

  • Troops are mobilised exclusively in response to Empire aggression, military bases in allied regions are minimal.

  • Strongly supports magic use, and believes that by criminalizing magic use, the United Empire has violated a key human right

  • Strongly against monotheism, as it disrespects the pantheon

The Commonwealth

  • Mostly former Western Alliance countries that desired a more aggressive response to the Empire, and have been actively fighting its forces since its inception.

  • They seek to actively restore Empire countries by retaking them, but have not yet made a concerted effort, due to continue efforts to defend against the Empire.

  • There is no military presence within these countries, except those actively in conflict.

  • Support magic, and defend its use.

  • There are some countries with monotheism as the dominant religion, but these countries still oppose the Empire and the criminalization of magic.

2018

In the year 2018, the president of the United States of America launched a military occupation across the country. There was some resistance, but it was quickly quelled, and the United Empire was formed by 2020. The creation of the Empire was the first step in achieving 3 major goals:

  • To eradicate the use of magic in a country on the cutting edge of technology

  • To fulfill the will of the One True God

  • To unite all countries under common law

before 2018

Before the formation of the empire, each country was controlled only by itself, and magic was practiced freely across the globe.

2025

The world watched as the worship of the gods was wiped out entirely in the US under strict magical use laws. Its citizens were monitored through social media, communications devices, smart technology, everything was under the control of the government. Magic users were turned criminals, and though some tried to keep their faith alive, by 2025, it was impossible to find a public magic user in the country.

It was generally considered a bad sign that the US had left democracy behind, but nobody wanted to start a world war, and so these actions went unopposed.

2030

In the year 2030, Mexico was integrated in the Empire, with the terms of the agreement unknown to those who weren’t in the room where the documents were signed. Overnight, the same military forces that swept across the states became present in Mexico, and magic once against was eliminated. Those same forces moved north, declaring war on Canada, this time without an agreement. The war between the 2 countries sparked immediate condemnation from the world, but many countries who had been long allies of the US were uncertain of how to proceed.

2031

From this war in North America, the Eastern Alliance was born. In response to growing concerns of the increasing military power, and breach of human rights, Russia, China and Pakistan publicly denounced the United Empire, and declared their alliance against the growing power.

A handful of other countries joined the alliance, and the military presence within these countries grew to reflect the growing concerns that the Empire would not be done when the conflict in Canada resolved.

2032

Though most other countries had condemned the action of the Empire, they were not so quick to challenge its power. Canada fell, and North America was officially Empire controlled. With concerns as the America’s next move, many European, and even Asian countries declared their own alliance - the Western Alliance - and that they would actively preserve magic, even if it meant direct opposition against the Empire

2033

There were attempts to move through the far north, but swift resistance from the Eastern Alliance ended these efforts.

2034

The Empire moved South, but their approach into South America was slowed by militant forces that actively resisted the military. The difficult terrain, and the exhaustion of the military lead to a pull back, stopping in Central America

2035

By 2035, most of the conflict had died down, until an Empire fleet showed up along the coast of Europe. Troops appeared in France, The UK, Spain and all along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Troops from the UK, and a handful of other Western Alliance countries quickly retaliated, but many European countries refused to fight an all out war with the Empire, seeking to find a peaceful resolution instead. The Empire took the path of least resistance through France.

2036

In the space of a year, the Empire took all of France with minimal resistance. France had aligned itself with the Western Alliance, but the continued fear of an all out world war resulted in what can only be considered ‘giving up.’ The countries that fought split from the Western Alliance, into the Commonwealth, having fought primarily in the UK, and being long-standing allies of England.

2038

The Empire’s efforts in Commonwealth aligned countries lessened, and it continued to bulldoze through European countries, taking Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark.

2043

The war in Europe ended in 2043, with the Empire having a significant foothold in the region

europesdefeat.png

2047

Four years of peace passed before the Empire continued its expansion. This time, it was met with more resistance. An attempt was made to expand into more of Europe, but the Western Alliance had learned its lesson, and resisted with their full force. After a year, the fighting moved from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The Eastern Alliance, which had benefited largely from the weakness of other countries, was finally drawn into all out war throughout the Pacific Islands and in China. Little progress was made along this front, but the conflict is ongoing.

2049

In addition to the conflict in the Pacific, the Empire renewed its effort in South America. Fighting 2 fronts has exhausted the Empire, but it has similarly exhausted the peoples of these countries. It is believed that at some point one side will give, and this give will determine the outcome of the war.

TIMELINE

Documenting the rise of the United Empire, and the Alliances that formed as a result

conflct

ONGOING CONFLICT

There continues to be conflict in Central and South America as the United Empire attempts to gain control over these regions. They have been met with resistance from local militias, the military and some Eastern allied forces defending these regions. Terrain continues to be a limiting factor for the Empire, and as such their approach has changed, with them attempting to gain control of coastal regions and move inward, as opposed to downward through Central America.

The war in the Pacific continues, with the Empire gaining control of small islands, building military bases, and moving west into larger regions. They have been met primarily with defense from the Commonwealth, but after directly challenging China, the Eastern Empire has joined the war, and are working alongside the Commonwealth to defend the region. The two alliances are cooperating, but their military forces have maintained independence from one another, and have yet to enter each other's regions. Unaffiliated regions have accepted assistance from both alliances, and it is here where these militaries have had the most interactions. Positive relations have been building between the Eastern Alliance and the Commonwealth as a result of this common goal.
